I used to be a morning person.
Key word: “used to.”
The alarm sounds early in this house & sometimes it can be downright tough to get myself out of bed.
If I attempt to wake up at 5:30 AM to make my husband breakfast (no job on this planet should start at 6:00 AM!), I am a zombie in human form. I don’t like to turn bright lights on. I whine about the early-morning cold of our house. And I hate to admit that I walk to the coffee maker before anything else.
It’s pathetic really.
And I got to thinking….
I’m just pushing through. I’m not being joyful, not being a servant, and most certainly not starting my day off on the right foot.
So I started doing these five things.
Turn on some music. It really is amazing how hard it is to be grumpy when you have your favorite music playing in the background. I recommend either the ‘Rend Collective’ Pandora station or the ‘Johnny Swim’ Pandora station. Those are my personal favorites.
Plan your breakfast – and make it fun. Even if you aren’t someone who can eat right when you wake up (I don’t understand how that it a real thing), take some time to plan what you will eat for breakfast. And, if you’re able, make it fun! I’m talking cake, muffin in a mug, waffles, eggs cooked well. Don’t skimp here. After all, breakfast is a really important meal. Look forward to it.
Open the curtains or blinds. Now, if you read above, you will realize that this was a hard step for me. Harsh light first thing in the morning – ugh, too much! But I started opening the curtains, even just a little bit, and it has done wonders. Seeing cars and runners outside also reminds me that other non-zombie humans do this thing called morning, so I don’t feel so alone in my early wake-up call.
Make something a routine. Every morning, choose to do something you love. For me, I won’t give this up during my quiet time, but for you it could be going for a walk, reading the newspaper, calling a friend, watching the morning news, etc. There are no hard and fast rules, but if you make time for something that you love, it’s pretty hard to be grumpy. You might even start to enjoy your morning.
Clean something. This sounds boring, and many people don’t like cleaning. (I am not one of them.) But – hang with me here – cleaning something brings a sense of accomplishment. Even if it’s just those dishes left over from last night or vacuuming one room in the house, you accomplished something that brings order and peace into your morning.
Several times a week I do sleep past 5:30 AM, but even if I wake up a little later, these five tips still start my morning off on the right foot.
I find myself seeing joy in the little things, pausing to reflect on my emotions in the moment, serving my husband more faithfully, and loving my day even more.
